Eastern Recherche Marine Park

Eastern Recherche Marine Park protects waters around islands of the Recherche Archipelago, which were once joined to the mainland.

Some of the Recherche Archipelago islands are important breeding sites for seabirds, including the only breeding population of great-winged petrels in Australia.

Artefacts found on Salisbury Island show evidence that Indigenous people lived there in the past.

Beyond the islands, the park stretches far out to the deep ocean at the limit of Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Ngadju and Esperance Nyungar people have responsibilities for Sea Country in the park.

The park is 135 kilometres east of Esperance and adjacent to Recherche Archipelago. It covers 20,575 square kilometres, with depths from 15 metres to 6000 metres.

It has National Park and Special Purpose zones.

Explore

The park is south of the Western Australian Cape Arid National Park, with opportunities to explore coastal and inland environments adjacent to the Recherche Archipelago.
