South-east Marine Parks Network

The latest South-east Marine Parks Network Management Plan commenced in February 2025. Parks Australia sought to recognise the interests and aspirations of First Nations people in the plan.

First Nations-authored statement

The management plan includes a First Nations authored statement, which reflects the views and aspirations of the newly formed South-east Saltwater Council. The Director’s response to the statement is also included in the plan on page 6.

Principles for working in partnership with First Nations people

Parks Australia acknowledges Traditional Owners as essential partners in the management of Sea Country within the South-east Network. Revised partnership principles, specific to the South-east Network, were developed with guidance from the South-east Saltwater Council.

These principles are intended to be further refined through the co-design of a Sea Country Strategy for the South-east Network.

First Nations connections and partnerships program

A First Nations connections and partnerships program identifies how Parks Australia will manage Sea Country in the South-east Network in partnership with First Nations people. It includes actions that will be implemented over the life of the management plan. The program can be found on pages 41–43 of the management plan.
