Difference between Commonwealth and State managed marine parks
Australian Marine Parks are the largest part of Australia’s National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas, which also includes marine parks managed by state and territory governments. This national system of marine parks covers over half of Australian waters and is one of the largest areas of marine parks in the world.
The Australian Marine Parks featured on this page are in Commonwealth waters and managed by the Australian Government. Many of these marine parks are adjacent to marine parks in State waters which are managed by either the Western Australian Government or the South Australian Government.
For information about marine parks managed by the South Australian Government visit South Australian Government managed marine parks.
For information about marine parks managed by the Western Australian Government visit Western Australian Government managed marine parks.
Regional Engagement
The implementation of the North-west Marine Parks Network Management Plan is supported by the North-west Marine Parks Advisory Committee.
